Playing these old recordings is a problem – the lacquer deteriorates over time, developing cracks and sometimes detaching from the core, and of course glass is easily broken.

Similar to transduced gliomas created with another glioma cell line (CNS-1) [ 16, 17], the transduced U251/brevican-shDNA mock transfected cell-derived gliomas were invasive and exhibited cell clusters that detached from the tumor core, as well as extensive diffusion of single cells within the brain parenchyma.
As Tawfik and his colleagues have reported in a recent publication, these structures tend to have regular, well-packed structural cores and the catalytic residues mainly locate to loops largely detached from these cores and therefore perhaps better able to tolerate the destabilising effects of mutations [ 49, 50].
The condensed arrangement of the viral DNA, seen in the intact particle, was lost upon cell attachment; the genome 'relaxed', apparently detaching from the surrounding core membranes, thereby uniformly filling the entire core space (Figure 3A and B).
