Although the apartment was '50s to its bones, Mr. Meyer took the design even further, building vintage-looking radiator covers, buying a Youngstown kitchen sink that his landlord agreed to install, and covering various surfaces in vintage linoleum he has collected over the years.
An explosive transition is possible, although it might play out differently from in the movie: as Irving Good realised in 1965, machines with superhuman intelligence could repeatedly improve their design even further, triggering what Vernor Vinge called a "singularity" and Johnny Depp's movie character calls "transcendence".
"One of the things we're trying to set up with this workshop is kids will get partnered with a maker to collaborate with them for three to four months after the workshop to push the design even further," says Ganim. "Obviously five days is not a lot of time to learn about design, learn a whole bunch of skills, design something, and make a final something.
Teachers were already aware of the students' progress, which increased the motivation for implementing and testing the new design even further.
