A 12-week individualized graduated walking programme in the form of a specially designed booklet and pedometer was given to participants.
The main strategy is home based and will include a specially designed booklet with dietary and physical activity information, a muscle strength and flexibility exercise chart, a nutrition label reading shopping list and menu planner.
All parents allocated to the intervention group will be posted a study-designed booklet and DVD and will be offered an individual telephone consultation (at infant age 6 weeks) and group session (at infant age 12 weeks).

3. Disseminating educational materials: The research team from Fudan University School of Pubic Health, in consultation with experts from the Shanghai Institute of Family Planning Technical Instruction, designed a booklet especially for unmarried female youth named "safe sex- guidebook for female youth" (see figure 1).
