17 Many studies have described PA patterns through the lens of cross-sectional data, while fewer studies have examined changes between several time points after an intervention.
In a recent accelerometry study, Ruiz et al 49 identified four patterns to describe PA in preschool children where each contain varying brief periods of vigorous-PA, moderate-PA and light-PA, and sedentary activity throughout the day.
Due to bias and limitations, originating mainly from recall error, associated with self-reported PA assessment methods, accelerometers are increasingly used to describe PA of a population [ 7, 8, 6].

In order to better understand the pathophysiological pathways linking PA and glucose homeostasis, we described the PA levels in a population at high risk of developing diabetes and examined the association of accelerometer- and heart rate assessed PA energy expenditure (PAEE) during everyday life with various glucose homeostasis markers and long-term glycemia in a cross-sectional design.
