Our results have underscored the importance of utilizing the measures of deprivation of material resources, rather than SES indicators, in order to understand coercive sex among young women residing in urban slums.
Indeed in Malawi, narratives from focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with young people residing in urban slums add strength to the argument that whilst measures of SES have a positive influence on risk, it is essential to consider deprivation of material resources (Kamndaya et al., 2015).
To explain why material deprivation, rather than measures of SES, is more important for explaining young women׳s coercive sex, it should be noted that deprivation of material resources is found to be a more proximate indicator of risk among women than income, education, and wealth (Cramm et al., 2012; Greif, 2012; Thomas et al., 2011; Vearey et al., 2010).

The present associations were explained largely by educational attainment (55% - 78%) whereas household income and area deprivation (indicators of material and social resources) explained less than half of that, and labour market activity virtually none.
Townsend (1987) described two distinct forms of deprivation; material deprivation, a measure of access to 'goods and conveniences' and social deprivation, representing social cohesion, cooperation and support [11].
The Townsend deprivation score, a measure of material deprivation derived from the UK Census at a small area level, that strongly correlates with standardised mortality ratios, was also recorded.
CPRD also includes socioeconomic information provided by quintiles of the Townsend deprivation index, a measure of material deprivation calculated using census data and linked to area of residence (Townsend et al. 1988).
Data on demographic variables including sex, age, smoking status, alcohol use, body mass index (BMI) and Townsend deprivation index (a measure of material deprivation within a population that takes into account four main variables: unemployment rate, car ownership, home ownership and household overcrowding) [ 39] were collected any time before the start date.
We used the 2010 Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) as our indicator of material deprivation.
To explore the association of deprivation on aesthetics perception, the mean image ranks for all participants in the lowest and highest quartiles of deprivation (as determined by Index of Material Deprivation) were compared and shown in Table 2.
Deprivation by IDPs of material and social goods is evidenced by the fact that 90% respondents had experienced lack of food or water, over two thirds (65%) had been ill without medical care, and over three quarters (77%) had lacked housing or shelter.
