The protective immune response against pathogenic microorganisms involves two components: a rapid, antigen non-specific innate response and a delayed, acquired response specific for the antigens (Ags) displayed by invading microbes.
It has been shown that testosterone leads to delayed acquired immunity by directly affecting T or B cells [ 22], reducing NK cell activity [ 23], limiting lymphocyte proliferation, and decreasing immunoglobulin and cytokine production [ 24- 26].
The efficacy observed in patients with disease resistant to trastuzumab supports the need of larger trial to confirm a role of this combination to delay acquired trastuzumab resistance.
The finding of EGFR/FGFR3 kinase switching and acquired FGFR3 pro-survival signalling suggest investigation of new combinations of Ctx with selective inhibitors of FGFR3 to prevent or delay acquired resistance to Ctx.
This double hit is expected to circumvent and/or delay acquired resistance originating from pathway reactivation, and has been recently shown to prevent melanoma metastasis in a preclinical model [137].
The current trial, the only clinical experience reported of metronomic chemotherapy plus trastuzumab for patients with advanced breast cancer, indicates a role for this combination to possibly delay acquired resistance to trastuzumab, and to treat patients whose tumor variants have acquired resistance.
As de-repression of FGFR3 activity rapidly replaces the loss of EGFR-ligand signalling in terms of cell proliferation and survival, combinations of Ctx and FGFR3-targeted drugs may be a valuable strategy to enhance the efficacy of single Ctx while preventing or delaying acquired resistance to Ctx.
The differential absorption versus optical delay acquired from the as-grown β-Ga2O3 NWs and the Ga2O3/Ga2S3 NWs obtained after processing with H2S at 400 and 500 °C are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, respectively.
On MRI acquisition, lesions show heterogeneous signal on unenhanced sequences and appear hypointense on early and delayed images acquired after gadolinium administration [48].
However, all published studies used delayed images acquired 4 h after intravenous injection of a Gd-chelate or 24 h after intratympanic injection of a Gd-chelate [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10].
Surface deposits are usually best seen on delayed images acquired 5 10 min after injection when they become hyperintense due to slow accumulation of contrast within the tumour (Fig. 4).
