The main reasons were insufficient ward bed availability (21%), delays in bed allocation (30%), delays in the completion of administrative tasks on the ICU (4%), delays in adequate preparation of ward beds (27%) for the arrival of the ICU patient, and delays that were attributable to intrahospital transport arrangements (5%).

There was then a further delay in accessing the rehabilitation bed.
Examples where rehabilitation should ideally occur within acute care include times when the patient is able to participate in formal rehabilitation but is not medically stable enough to be transferred off-site, when the patient has to remain in acute care to undergo further investigations or procedures, or when there is a delay in accessing a rehabilitation bed.
Studies have shown that not only is this hormone suppressed, but people who use gadgets in bed have delayed REM sleep and feel less alert the next morning.
In terms of delays measured in hospital bed days in Table II, a 10% increase in home-care beds would reduce delayed bed days by 7.8 9.2%, which, given an average of 236 delayed bed days in a month, corresponds to a reduction of 18 22 days per month in an average LA.
Access block, that is, the excessive delay in access to appropriate inpatient beds due to limited health service capacity, was more likely to be viewed as an impediment to optimal care for patients with cancer by those working in a mixed ED and those who worked in a regional or rural hospital (Table 3).
One study concluded that improvements in bed management are essential for decreasing discharge delays [ 32].
