Although RH injuries produce a variety of deficits, research in the RH has been done just 40 years ago (Côté et al. 2007).
However, residency programmes tend to be tilted towards an almost purely clinical approach, which can lead to a deficit in research education.
A number of the papers in this special issue address this deficit, with research relating directly to the globalization of health care markets.
For example, there is a deficit of research conducted in female models of chronic kidney disease because most available models of kidney disease exhibit little pathology in females.
Finally, although this study provides clues to the way in which different genotypes activate their transcriptomes when subjected to water deficit, more research is required to understand the molecular mechanisms involved during the dry season.
Nonetheless, data pertaining to prevalence rates of anxiety disorders are limited and are impeded by a number of factors including a deficit in research [ 3], the definition of anxiety during pregnancy and postnatal period as a specific category [ 4] and a heterogeneous use of psychometric data [ 5].
My attention-deficit-driven research has shown that global sales of condoms are expected to top 27 billion units in 2015, whereas the latest count, in 2008, put the number of abortions globally at 43 million, leading me to deduce that condoms are greatly affecting the growth of the abortion job market.
Given the very real deficit of research-support skills in most low-income countries – in synthesis, in communications, in brokering, in training – a KTP must spend significant time and resources in building these types of in-house expertise.
Indeed, evidence indicates that policymakers want to use robust information (e.g., from systematic reviews) to inform decision making, but often prioritise locally relevant information sources due to limited resources and time, and perceived deficits in research skills [ 23].
To understand these deficits, more research is needed to examine the larger health care structure within which service providers work, and how this structure not only informs and influences the delivery of services, but also how particular structural barriers impinge on and/or restrict practice.
