Several of the original spo mutants proved to be hypomorphic alleles of essential genes (Nakase et al. 2001; Nakamura-Kubo et al. 2003) and so are not present in our deletion set; however we identified 13 known sporulation-defective mutants listed as present in the collection (Table 4).
Additionally, to identify the genes that encode for essential and non-redundant function, the subset of genes that were expressed at a higher level in somatic embryos were probed with the embryo defective mutant gene list reported in the SeedGenes database (http://www.seedgenes.org/).org/
