He wanted the project to bear more resemblance to a playground than to a video game, and he sought to give it simple controls and realistic terrain to decrease the learning curve for beginners.
This would have decreased the learning curve that otherwise might have been seen.
The availability of user graphical interfaces for these packages would decrease the learning curve and broaden their application.
