To investigate how many times competence has increased or decreased during the divergence of these strains, we inferred the evolutionary relationships of strains using the largest datasets currently available.
Reducing the lifespan of flowers to one tenth of the baseline value, so that the average number of visits per flower is reduced from 20 to 2, leads to a further decrease in the divergence of corolla-tube depth (0.24±0.08 units).
Our findings indicate that G. henleyi's type of rarity may be explained by two factors that are not mutually exclusive-high mobility rates, which decrease the level of divergence between populations, and an ongoing bottleneck, which lowers both the overall and within-population genetic diversity.
