It is well known that the sensitivity of mammography is decreased in the dense breast [ 7, 8] and a high BIRADS score tells a referring physician who is concerned about breast cancer that other tests less affected by density, such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), might be warranted.
In contrast, a 2-year intervention study using a low-fat high-carbohydrate diet observed that, while there was a decrease in the mammographic dense area associated with weight loss, the percentage of density actually increased [ 44].
