Since the Muschelkalk formation is declining in thickness in the SE direction, upwelling thermal crystalline basement waters are most likely the chloride source in the Upper Muschelkalk aquifer especially in the SE of the investigation area.
These changes paralleled a structural decline in mucosal thickness, crypt depth, and crypt density, but the loss was greater in cecal than distal mucosa, although the cause of this difference is unclear.
By integrating the model of piecewise exponential decline in tephra thickness with distance (Fig. 4) from A1/2 = 260 km (corresponding to the Faroe Islands) out to infinity, and converting the volume to mass using bulk density of 1400 kg m−3 the result is that the mass of ash transported beyond the Faroe Islands on 14 16 April amounted to m = 2 6·109 kg (2 6 Tg).
Conclusion Although safe and resulting in lower decline in muscle thickness as observed on echography (not blinded assessment), the addition of daily leg bicycling and EMS to ESR did not result in higher global muscle strength as assessed by the MRC score (blinded assessment) at ICU discharge in a mixed and heterogeneous population of critically ill patients.
However, in their study after the second trimester there was a significant decline in the thickness of the myometrium in the anterior aspect of the lower uterine segment, which was not examined in our study.
During the subsequent 6 weeks of rest, medial cartilage continued to degrade; in the lateral compartment, an ongoing decline in cartilage thickness was not seen (Fig. 5c e).
Patients with a decrease of tumor mass in endoscopy and a >50% decline in wall thickness seen in the CT and/or endoscopic ultrasound were defined as clinical responders [ 24].
Although trabecular thickness also decreased with age in our models, no consensus has been reached for humans, where reports have shown a decline in trabecular thickness (Parfitt et al., 1983; Birkenhäger-Frenkel et al., 1988), a decline in men only (Wakamatsu and Sissons, 1969; Aaron et al., 1987; Mellish et al., 1989), and a decline in both men and women (Rehman et al., 1994).
Alternatively, a recent study showed that a decline in skin-fold thickness (for a given weight loss) was associated with reduced mortality, whereas weight loss (for a given change in skin-fold thickness) was associated with increased mortality indicating that loss of fat mass with preservation of lean body mass decrease mortality [6].
