The jerk of ~1970 was recorded all over the globe in declination data.
This also applies to the gravity cores at the Meisei and Hokuto Seamounts; the declination data could not be used because they were possibly influenced by core twisting.
Differences essentially concern the inclinations, as they are larger than the error bars estimated for the instrumental measurements, while they are weak enough to remain within the error bars estimated for the declination data (Additional file 1: Fig. S1).
For many years, interpretation of paleomagnetic results has been controversial because declination data have been obtained only from the eastern margin, where subduction-related tectonic processes may have caused local, rather than plate-wide, rotations (Hall et al. 1995c).
Where inclinations were measured at an isolated site, declinations corresponding to the site provided by the gufm1 model were assigned, assuming a good fit of declination data, which were already relatively numerous worldwide during the seventeenth century.
When looking at 400 years of data [see, e.g., a discussion based on historical declination data from several locations in Western Europe and on gufm1 time series in Demetrescu and Dobrica (2014 ], an evolution of the field emerges characterized by a slow variation at a timescale that seems larger than 400 years.

The declination and inclination data from ODP Site 983 are plotted using the PANGEA database (Channell et al. 2013).
The archeomagnetic and volcanic part of GEOMAGIA50.v3 currently contains 14,645 data (declination, inclination, and paleointensity) from 461 studies published between 1959 and 2014.
The aim of the visualization is to show the locations of archeomagnetic and volcanic sites within Google Earth, differentiate by data type (inclination, declination, and paleointensity) and by time, and is explained further in the 'Google visualization' section.
A continuous declination of the local strain data from a straight line since the beginning of yield (i.e., 6%% of strain) is clearly visible.
In Fig. 2b, all declinations associated with the inclination data were estimated using the gufm1 model.
