In our molecular phylogenetic analyses, we used specific decisive datasets for each of our phylogenetic questions.
To compile decisive datasets, we selected four taxonomic groups of interest for each of our seven phylogenetic questions (Table 2 and Table 3).
The seven specifically designed decisive datasets that we analyzed to address our seven phylogenetic questions each consisted of a subset of taxa and genes from the complete dataset, except for dataset 1 which is identical to the complete dataset.
All OGs that contained at least one sequence of a representative of each group were extracted with Perl scripts (available upon request) and concatenated into seven supermatrices that constitute the seven decisive datasets.
We call a dataset phylogenetically decisive if all included OGs contain at least one sequence of a representative of each taxonomic group of interest.
Following the arguments put forth by Dell'Ampio et al. [ 22], a dataset is deemed "decisive" if information of each gene is available from each taxonomic group of interest and thus can contribute to resolving the relationships among these groups.
