We combined keywords and Medical Subject Heading terms for shared decision-making, decision-making, patient participation, doctor-patient relationship, informed decision, decision support, decision support techniques, litigation, medical malpractice, liability, medical negligence claim and legal proceedings (see full list in Additional file 3).
This was measured with a Dutch translation of the decisional conflict scale (DCS) (including the subscales values clarity, informed decision making, effective decision making, decision making support, decision making uncertainty) [ 29].

The main themes identified were: the woman-care provider relationship, care providers' attitude and communication skills, enabling women to participate, exploration of preferences, women's autonomy, information exchange, use of evidence, involvement of partners, tension around decision-making and decision-making when options are not equivalent or in urgent situations.
This highlights the role of the individual's coping style and the complexity of ESRD decision-making process, making collaborative decision-making, a preferred route even amongst those who are well educated and actively seek involvement through information.
Regardless of the subject in decision making, the decision-making process usually involves the process of evaluating a finite set of alternatives to rank them from the best to the worst (Zavadskas and Turkis 2011).
