However, if judgmental forecasts are combined with a statistical forecast, restricting the decision support provided to human judges to contextual anchors is beneficial.
As fewer alternatives remain in the planning process, information on the performance of each alternative increases, allowing to evaluate environmental impacts in more detail as well as adding other dimensions to the decision support provided by evaluation tools.
It finds a substantial gap or misalignment between ERP functionality and MTO requirements; for example, between decision support provided by ERP systems and the decision support required by MTO companies at the customer enquiry and design & engineering stages.
Thus, if the role of human judgment is to detect these nonlinearities (and the linearities are taken care of by some statistical model with which judgments are combined), then a restriction of the decision support provided makes sense.
In that deployment, the decision originated locally, but there is also a potentially large market for decision support provided remotely over a service oriented architecture [ 17, 18].
Therefore, an interprofessional approach to SDM has the potential to improve the quality of patient decision support provided within primary care.
This framework has three key process elements: a) identification of patient's modifiable decision making needs; b) intervention designed to address modifiable needs; and c) evaluation of the decision support provided [ 16].
Should the efficacy evaluation reveal clear improvements in the quality of decision support provided by clinicians who received the intervention, a larger scale implementation and effectiveness trial will be considered.
As well, we recently completed a study funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care which aimed at improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of decision support provided by primary health professionals in Family Health Networks in Ontario.
We believe such a model of decision support, providing recommendations rather than assessments, at the time and location of decision making, automatically as part of the clinical workflow, meet the criteria of a decision support system's ability to improve clinical practice [ 20].
