Prior to joining the MIT faculty, Thomas was a Principal Research Scientist at RLE. Thomas's research interests focus on signal processing, mathematical modeling, and model identification to support real-time clinical decision making, monitoring of disease progression, and titration of therapy, primarily in neurocritical and neonatal critical care.

Figure 2 illustrates an ongoing cycle of decision-making, monitoring, assessment, and feedback that leads gradually to a better understanding of resource dynamics, and a better management strategy based on what is learned.
We have characterized adaptive management in this paper in terms of a set-up or deliberative phase in which the elements of adaptive decision-making are developed and refined, and an iterative phase in which those elements are incorporated into a recurrent cycle of decision-making, monitoring, assessment, and learning (Fig. 1).
On the positive side, standardised outcome measurement tools are more likely to be taken up where clinicians perceive them to be clinically useful [ 2]; for example, guiding clinical decision-making, monitoring progress or communicating with other teams or with the patient and family.
