A Cochrane review of randomized control trials found evidence that shared decision making interventions (through "decision aids") improved a variety of measures associated with decision knowledge and decision quality and tended to result in more conservative treatment options selected rather than invasive surgery options [ 8].
Shared decision making interventions and the use of decision aids should be considered for this area.
To the extent that preferred and actual involvement in decision making differs across clinical decisions, the benefits of shared decision making interventions similar to ours (i.e. including a decision aid, coaching session, and physician education session) may differ across decisions and should be tested.
