To validate that the decay in the number of foci represents repair (and not loss of signal due to photobleaching), we confirmed that the distribution of the number of foci at 18 hours post irradiation is similar between cells that were imaged frequently (every hour) and cells that were imaged only at 18 hours post irradiation.
The decay in the number of foci was fitted to an exponential model and the half-life of 53BP1 foci was calculated for each cell [ 32- 34].
It was designed to study double beta decay in a number of different isotopes.
Nevertheless, we raise a flag on interpreting the IV estimates at face value, as the samples are not strictly comparable due to the decay in the number of observations.

The interaction effect between the cumulative load between admissions in model II (with 25% decay) and number of admissions did not reach significance, indicating that the effect of cumulative load on the risk of admission does not change with subsequent admissions.
For example, in alpha decay the atomic number of the "daughter" element is two less than that of the "mother" element, and its atomic weight is four less; this seems consistent with the fact that the alpha ray, identified as helium, has atomic number 2 and atomic weight 4, so that total atomic number and total atomic weight are conserved in the decay reaction.
The model predicts strongly anisotropic decay away from the source, with the power flow decaying exponentially in the number of junctions from the source, except along the axial directions of the network, where the decay is algebraic.
