According to debt charity StepChange, the number of younger people seeking debt advice has been increasing in recent years.
Medical school debt, which has been increasing at a rate of 6% to 7% per year since 2000, now stands at an average of $155,000 among American medical school graduates, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
Countries where the share of food import expenditure in total export earnings (including debt service) has been increasing include Botswana, Brazil, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Senegal, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
By contrast, return on capital -- a measure preferred by many money managers -- reflects current leverage but won't show whether a company has been increasing its debt burden, Mr. Thorndike said.

However, as Phillips notes, a precedent has been set – since the 2012 election, the debt limit has been increased twice and each time Republicans have failed to attach substantial policy provisions to the increases.
