Hillslopes are scoured and washed bare of weathered debris; streams erode gullies and transport large volumes of sediment from the uplands to the plains; broad, braided river channels are developed; and extensive alluvial plains are formed.
Upper slopes tend to be erosional but with coarse-grained debris streams moving across them.
"Over the past 15 or 20 years, astronomers have done a very good job at figuring out, 'OK, here's where the debris streams will lie,'" Rich Talcott, senior editor of Astronomy magazine, told The News-Press. "I'm thinking the odds are pretty good we'll get something nice May 24".

The debris stream left by comet Swift-Tuttle, which produces the Perseids, is wide, so the shooting stars could make an appearance well before the moon becomes full.
