In order to ensure that the risk of death reduction associated with vinflunine is the same whether or not patients received prior cisplatin, a statistical test for interaction was conducted (Table 5).
The reduction from the reference period of −3.9 deaths per 10 000 in the invited (and the −4.4 per 10 000 less deaths amongst the screened) when compared with the −2.8 death reduction in the noninvited, indicates that about one-third of the reduction in women exposed to screening is due to the screening rounds and the other two-thirds due to other causes, including therapeutic innovations.
Moreover, recent studies that have simultaneously reduced the protein levels of both hnRNP A1 and A2 in cultured cells have demonstrated a role for them in cell proliferation [ 4], as well as a strong association of their reduction with cell death in cancer but not in non-cancer immortalised cells, indicating that cancer cells require these proteins for viability [ 17].
During the 20th century, many countries experienced quite similar reductions in death rates with a reduction between 2 and 3 deaths per 1,000 population in a decade, such as in Japan (91) and Mexico (17).
