"These things are like modern dating," said one government official familiar with the programs.
"I'd hear about this Jennifer and say, 'Why aren't you dating?' " said M. J. Pedone Needleman, who has known Mr. Berkowitz for 10 years.
"It's changed every aspect of dating," said Sherry Amatenstein, a dating expert for the iVillage online network and author of "The Q & A Dating Book" (Adams Media, 2000).
"If you Google the term 'single,' all that comes up is dating, dating, dating," said Sherri Langburt, a founder of SingleEdition.com.
"What we're doing is a hybrid between performance art and speed dating," said Charles Stainback, the Norton Museum's photography curator who, with Cheryl Brutvan, the curator of contemporary art, are embarking on this art fair marathon.
"We believe it is possible that neutron emissions by earthquakes could have induced the image formation on the Shroud's linen fibres, through thermal neutron capture on nitrogen nuclei, and could also have caused a wrong radiocarbon dating," said Prof Carpinteri.
