The long-term care register contains the person's identification number and the starting date of care.
For new patients to the clinic in 2012 (newly diagnosed or transferred from another clinic) the date of their first appointment attended or admission was taken as the start date of their care, for all other patients the start date of care was 01/01/2012.
Inclusion criteria were that the child had a WA postcode as place of residence, was aged ≤18 years, and had been an inpatient (stayed at least one night; determined by admission date and separation date minus days of care provided by Hospital in the Home).
For each transition, the date, location of care (for example, home, acute care, long-term care) and an indicator of the services provided were included.
Consequently, a questionnaire specifically designed for this study was developed to obtain information about: the residents' admission date, type of care, birth year, sex, stoma, medical diagnosis, medications, cognitive impairment, FI, urinary incontinence, constipation, diarrhoea, and bowel management (FI, constipation and diarrhoea).
