In the studies conducted to date, admission to hospital following Emergency Department discharge for CAP is between 1.5-8.5 1.5-8.5n 30-days [ 6, 8, 10, 12, 13].
Data elements acquired from the administrative data source included the patients' unique provincial personal health care number, the hospital chart number, sex, birth date, admission date, up to 16 diagnostic codes, and up to 10 procedure codes.
To carry this out, the following identification variables were chosen: birth date, gender, admission date, discharge date, postal code and readmission (coded as a binary variable).
For each patient, medical records were collected in the NHI claim database, including date of admission, date of discharge, dates of visits, clinical diagnosis, prescription and total expenditure.
Because the inpatient cases are found in both datasets, we de-duplicated the merged dataset using probabilistic matching on eight variables (date of admission, date of discharge, date of birth, sex, age, residential ZIP code, diagnosis codes and facility code).
Its data include date of admission, date of surgery, date of discharge, surgical procedures, and diagnoses.
Variables available in the CMS dataset include age, gender, state of residence, date of admission, date of discharge, and up to 10 diagnostic fields.
LOS was determined by the following equation: LOS = (discharge date - admission date) + 1 day.
