In this study, we test the impact of assimilating SWE data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer – Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) instrument into the US National Weather Service NWSSNOW17W17 model for seven watersheds in the Upper Mississippi River basin.
We conducted a global simulation at 2° × 2.5° spatial resolution and three nested regional simulations at 0.5° × 0.667° resolution from 2004 to 2008 using assimilated meteorological data from the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS-5) at the NASA Global Modeling Assimilation Office GMAOO).
This model is based on the radio-occultation data of the satellite missions CHAMP (2001 2008), GRACE (2007 2011), COSMIC (2006 2012) as well as the ionospheric sounding data from the 62 Earth-based Digisonde sounders (1987 2012).
In particular, NASA is continuously gathering high-dimensional image data from the surface of the earth with hyperspectral sensors such as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) or the Hyperion hyperspectral imager aboard NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) spacecraft.
