Our result is closer to the epicenter location (40.80N 29.13E) of ISS Bulletin data for the year 1963.
Therefore, we tried to relocate these events using ISS and seismic station bulletin data and also compare them with available original records.
The data from the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre (ISC) have always been and still remain in demand for a wide range of studies in Geosciences.
We thank Ray Willemann, one of the former Directors of the ISC, for his initiative in continuing to source and collect historical bulletin data even though the standard ISC analysis of the corresponding time periods had been completed.
This work has made the ISC Bulletin data for this period fully consistent with those produced for more recent period (2011 2015) following an introduction of a more appropriate velocity model and earthquake location program.
They re-determined the location of the 1963 event using ISC Bulletin data that includes the stations within a 12° distance and found that this event occurred on the north of the Armutlu Peninsula.
For 04.01.1935-14 41 event, in addition to data from ISS Bulletin, the readings from obtained original records which are not in the list of ISS Bulletin and are seismograms of ISK, ATH, MNH, FBR, COI stations were included.
In this study, epicenter of the 1963 Çınarcık Earthquake is found to be at 40.80N 29.18E, based on the readings on the original seismograms and ISC Bulletin data, in the Sea of Marmara.
Figure 2 illustrates the different steps from data transmission to bulletin publication.
More importantly, using external objective weather records and avalanche bulletin data issued at the time of accidents, they found that for at least the two clues – Unstable Snow and Thaw – missing values meant that the clues were actually absent.
Note that the assumption underlying this adjustment was that the bias in Health Bulletin data in 2007 relative to DLHS-3 was consistent across years.
