"The silver lining in the fact that we have not been inspecting is that we have instead been familiarizing ourselves with our data base," said Ewen Buchanan, the spokesman for the weapons team here.
"The big long-term concern about privacy is the surreptitious compilation of every site you click, every page you download, every product you order into a single data base," said Marc Rotenberg, the director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington.
Rich Zinne, project manager for the new shopping-center data base, said that more than 350 demographic characteristics are contained in the data base for six radii around each center (1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 miles).
Oracle, the world's largest data base company, said earnings were $195 million, or 20 cents a share, in its first quarter, which ended on Aug. 31.
It is not clear what kind of access law enforcement officials would have to the new data bases, experts said.
