Having the observatory data and the calculated electric fields obtained with the method described in the previous subsection, we can solve the linear system of equations given by Equation 6 for G. Since G is time-independent, the system is highly over-determined, as the relation must hold for every sample in time.
A three-dimensional (3-D) analysis is particularly important for marine MT data because the electric and magnetic fields observed on the seafloor are distorted by the rugged seafloor topography and the distribution of land and ocean.

We use the vertical magnetic variations observed at all other BEAR stations (i.e. excluding magnetic data from the station being studied) as the input data and calculate the surface electric field at Jokkmokk and Boden using the SECS technique.
