After enduring a devastating storm surge in 1953, Rotterdam began building a series of dams, barriers, and seawalls as part of a national project called Delta Works, and five years ago the Dutch government provided funds for an upgrade, the Rotterdam Climate Proof Program.
BRADLEY, Me. — Under a bright sky here, a convoy of heavy equipment rolled onto the bed of the Penobscot River on Monday to smash the Great Works Dam, a barrier that has blocked the river for nearly two centuries.

The Delta Works, a series of dams and barriers constructed in the 1960 's 1980s changed the estuarine landscape of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta (SW Netherlands) into more stagnant and disengaged freshwater, brackish water or saltwater lakes.
The last barrier dam to be completed was that stretching across the three channels of the Eastern Schelde, or Oosterschelde.
Since the IJsselmeer (formerly Zuiderzee) barrier dam was closed in 1932, converting this large body of water into a freshwater lake, the Dutch have been continually enclosing and reclaiming smaller bodies (polders).
In the IJsselmeer, or IJssel Lake, formed from the southern part of the Zuiderzee, four large polders, the IJsselmeer Polders, with a total area of about 650 square miles (1,700 square km), were constructed around a freshwater basin fed by the IJssel and other rivers and linked with the sea by sluices and locks in the barrier dam.
(1) Donghekou landslide The Donghekou landslide located in Qingchuan County, near the northeastern end of the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault, killed 780 people and blocked the convergence of the Qingzhujiang river and the Hongshi river, forming the Donghekou landslide dam and two barrier lakes (Fig. 7a-d).
They also prevent fish migrations up- and downstream, and dams are a barrier to sediment flows.
