Shostakovich had a penchant for using recurring motifs in his scores, almost like dropped clues, especially the DSCH motif, drawn from letters in his name (which correspond in pitch to D, E flat, C, B).
These letters — the first four of D. Schostakowitsch, the German spelling of his name — are translated to musical notes as D, E flat, C and B. The quartet opens with the cello playing the funereal sequence, which is then mournfully intoned by the other strings.

Extensive references to Shostakovich's works and repeated use of his musical signature (DSCH, played D-E flat-C-B) made the symphony seem a bit like a gruesome patchwork animated à la Frankenstein's monster.
Passacaglia on DSCH (1962): played by the composer, a revelation of this simultaneously awe-inspiringly virtuosic and epically diverse piece, but it's tied together by the ever-present focus on the musical motto of Shostakovich's name, used by Dmitri himself in so many of his compositions: D - E flat ("Es" in German nomenclature) – C – B natural ("H" in the German system).
The music then pushes on past this leap of faith through C#, D and E flat before collapsing back into A flat.
