Last week I wrote about how cash-strapped state schools are cutting courses that cost more to teach, which unfortunately also happen to be the classes that are most likely to get students jobs (nursing, engineering, etc).
The taskforce recommended better pay for academics, changes to the funding formula for STEM subjects by the funding councils to dissuade universities from cutting courses, and a greater priority given to the refurbishment of science labs.
In an e-mailed response to questions, Dr. Manfredi replied that, "the Faculty of Arts is not cutting courses but rather streamlining its course offering in order to increase the proportion of Arts courses and students taught by permanent, full-time faculty members instead of temporary course lecturers".
He said none of the main parties would expand state funding for universities, adding that institutions would meet funding shortfalls by cutting courses, facilities and support for poorer students, or by giving overseas students preference over British ones.
Resolving the budget crisis by excluding students from college, preventing them from graduating on time by cutting courses, and heavily taxing them through soaring tuition is unfair to this generation and will do deep and lasting harm to our state.
Not that the school doesn't want to help you, but it can't because the state, mayors, and community won't grant it the funds to hire more teachers, have smaller classes, and broaden the curriculum, instead of cutting courses.
Surely cutting the course down further only serves to undermine the complexity of the job and the standards and values that we adhere to as part of our professional registration.

And don't even get me started with the 6'7" dudes double-fisting a beer and a squishy cocktail cup cutting a course toward their dates, who are holding spots for them, spots that are all somehow directly in front of you.
