Meanwhile, a report from the National Research Council criticized the Advanced Placement math and science curriculums for emphasizing breadth over depth -- and found that many teachers of advanced courses lack even a bachelor's degree in the subject they teach.
The new curriculums emphasize the breadth of careers that use computer science, as diverse as finance and linguistics, and the practical results of engineering, like iPhone apps, Pixar films and robots, a world away from the more theory-oriented curriculums of the past.
"You couldn't find many high schools with our architectural design, quality of space and breadth of curriculum," he said.
