The project uses a six-episode storyline to motivate students through a scalable collection of Flash games, group-work puzzles, design/artwork, debates and cross-curricular engagement drawn from the Pan-Canadian Science and, more generally, the Ontario intermediate-grade guidelines.
A well-rounded collegiate experience would not be complete without a healthy dose of para-curricular engagement.
For many students, faculty, and administrators, the applied arts are a wholesome activity that brings balance to lives filled with demanding coursework and frantic levels of extra-curricular engagement in clubs, sports, part-time employment and social life on campus.

"In light of the fact that you as freshmen will mature on multiple levels in college, in addition to absorbing the academic knowledge in your classes, actively seek out every moment to enhance your experiences from the lessons of extra-curricular, co-curricular, civic engagement, and informal campus activities to develop yourselves cognitively, socially, and professionally".

Cognitive engagement has traditionally been operationalized by measuring the extent of students' homework completion, class attendance, extra-curricular participation in activities, or their general interactions with the teachers, and how motivated they seem while engaging in classroom discussions (Appleton et al. 2006).
Besides finding the effect of individual characteristics on undergraduate scientific research activities engagement, we found that some of these dimensions (gender, conscientiousness, openness, and GPA) are also related to the type of extra-curricular involvement students choose, which further strengthens our findings.
They also wanted "more responsibilities" which might be interpreted as more meaningful engagement with curricular content.
