On the basis of the results obtained, the process parameters were optimized as follows: Sodium alginate concentration: 1.25 % w/v, sodium carboxymethylcellulose concentration: 4.25 % w/v, acacia concentration: 2.5 % w/v, HPMC K4M concentration: 1.875 % w/v, HPMC K15M concentration: 1.25 % w/v, calcium chloride concentration: 3.75 % w/v, curing time: 15 min, and curing speed: 60 rpm.
This fast thermal curing speed was attributed to the large number of active cations generated upon UV exposure that facilitated the thermal polymerization process.
The very fast curing speed of these materials is discussed in detail with the aid of FT-IR and photo-DSC measurements.
In addition, it will be shown that with these binder systems the overall balance of appearance, pot-life and curing speed can be enhanced to a very attractive level by the use of a well tuned catalyst package, allowing sufficient time for application, flow and de-aeration while offering the required fast curing characteristics as well.
