In the late Nineteenth century, tennis decorum required men to wear a suit and tie (Fig. 2) and women a cumbersome dress with a corset and long sleeves.
"One of my favorite moments is where she has the wedding dress on for the interview [scene] in 'Catching Fire.' It's a big cumbersome dress, and she fell down, so we played that over and over on the monitors.
But soon ladies, gasp, wanted to actually swim in the water, so the cumbersome bathing dresses were junked for wool (ick!) one pieces that stopped at mid-thigh.
At the time, it was customary for women wishing to immerse themselves in the sea to wear cumbersome woollen bathing dresses, together with bloomers, stockings, caps and shoes.
Which raises the question: Will the series spawn yet more nostalgia for that gorgeous, if cumbersome, era in women's dress?
