Because they have actually experienced the realities of war, operated in foreign environments, and negotiated with -- and often befriended -- people of other cultures, student veterans take classroom discussion from the theoretical to the real.
Without the ability to look at a cultural practice within the context of that culture, students often walk away with skewed understandings of different cultures and the deep desire to unnecessarily "fix" perceived problems.
In such a culture, students are finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish their everyday role as a consumer from that of being a student.
It should keep popular culture students busy for the next 20 years in the way that Mick Jagger in the mid-Sixties prompted countless theses on the subliminal black person within.
Wherein institutionalized learning has been very successful in equipping students with producing the "correct model" solution, the de-contextualized nature of schooling seeds incongruence between content and culture—students learn content that is framed within the culture of schooling, but whose application is oriented towards a target professional domain and its attendant complex problem paths.
Given the way that genetic mutations are often portrayed in science fiction and popular culture, students are more likely to state that new traits arise as a result of an organism's needs or in response to environmental changes rather than occurring through random genetic processes (Bishop and Anderson 1990; Dagher and Boujaoude 2005; Geraedts and Boersma 2006; Shtulman 2006).
