We used statistical information on maize cultivation shares and organic farming [17].
As expected [16], present maize cultivation shares are strongly correlated (p < 0.001) with the SUA in all four scenarios (Sc1 r = 0.86; Sc2 r = 0.95; Sc3 r = 0.85; Sc4 r = 0.90).
We explain this unexpected relation and the large variability by (a) the high shares of protected sites associated with low maize cultivation shares (r = −0.25, p < 0.001), (b) the varying clustering of protected areas [16], and the strong relation between SUA and agricultural area (Figure 1).
