The high-capacity retro-cue performance decayed over time [F 1,19) = 102.61, p<.001], and the limited-capacity post-cue performance was stable until four seconds after stimulus off-set [F 1,19) = .23, p = .64] (Fig. 7e).
Here, we increased cue latencies up to 5.5 s after display off-set (fig. 7c/d) to find when retro-cue performance drops to the level of post-cue performance.
Contrary to our expectations, we observed a drop in post-cue performance at the longest cue latency [F 3,17) = 8.524, p <.01].
This is logically problematic: if habits are responses to cues, performance frequency will vary with the frequency with which cues are encountered.
In particular, we intended to investigate whether (i) disease-associated impairment of internal action control is due to hypoconnectivity of the mesial premotor loop and preserved externally cued performance results from compensatory hyperconnectivity of the lateral premotor loop.
The possibility of a non-specific facilitatory effect of auditory stimulation was ruled out by Experiments 2 and 3. Experiment 2 contrasted valid and invalid cues: valid cues facilitated performance while invalid cues did not.
Specifically, we wanted to determine if a red cue improved performance (reduced discrimination thresholds) in the local task and impeded performance in the global task and if the opposite effect occurred for the blue cue condition.
One method is the formation of implementation intentions (or action planning) in which concrete 'if then' plans are formulated to link an environmental cue with performance of an intended behavioural action.
When several minutes, hours, or days intervene between the prospective memory instructions and appearance of a prospective memory cue, task performance is likely to reflect prospective memory proper but this single binary outcome trial is inefficient and much less reliable than continuous indices used to measure retrospective memory [1], [12], [16].
As shown previously (Fetsch et al. 2011), incorporating opposite cells into the decoding impairs cue integration performance.
