There was clear cleft formation between the low cuboidal basal cells and the overlying spinous keratinocytes.
At this stage, both the lingual and palatal epithelia consisted of a regimented series of cuboidal basal cells overlaid with highly flattened, elongated periderm cells (arrowheads in Fig. 3D).
