Three commonly found recycled construction and demolition waste materials, (crushed brick, recycled concrete aggregate and reclaimed asphalt pavement) were investigated to assess their suitability as a pipe backfilling material.
Five recycled aggregates were tested: (1) crushed brick, (2) crushed demolition aggregate, (3) solid municipal waste incinerator bottom ash aggregate, (4) a 1 1 mix of 1 and 2, and (5) a 1 1 mix of 3 and 2. Each was seeded with a wildflower mix that also included some Sedum acre and vegetation development was studied over a six-year period.
Results demonstrate and verify that the optimal mixture has a water/cement ratio of 0.5, a volume fraction of recycled coarse aggregate of 42.0%, 100% replacement of river sand, 0% crushed brick, and water-washed aggregates.
