To explore the neural substrates of visual tactile crossmodal integration during motion direction discrimination, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging with 15 subjects.

Here, we have used fMRI to investigate whether similar BOLD signal changes are observable during the crossmodal integration of nonspeech auditory and visual stimuli, matched or mismatched solely on the basis of their temporal synchrony, and if so, whether these crossmodal effects occur in similar brain areas as those identified during the integration of audio-visual speech.

It is known that crossmodal integration takes place within a certain, limited temporal and spatial range [6], [15], [29] [32].

Evidence has emerged for direct anatomical connections between superior temporal and occipital regions that may play an important role in the crossmodal integration of sensory experience [10], [11].

The requirement that both audio and visual signals be simultaneously present implies that the forward transition effect is based on a continual process of crossmodal integration.

On this assumption, crossmodal integration makes sense only when the perceptual system has evidence that the two separate multisensory events (e.g., one auditory and one visual) originate from a common source [7].

These data demonstrate the efficacy of using an analytic approach informed by electrophysiology to identify multisensory integration sites in humans and suggest that the particular network of brain areas implicated in these crossmodal integrative processes are dependent on the nature of the correspondence between the different sensory inputs (e.g. space, time, and/or form).

This study examined the influences of perceptual grouping and crossmodal temporal integration of auditory with tactile events in a tactile apparent-motion stream.

By contrast, crossmodal temporal integration was evident with fully paired audiovisual stimuli, that is, when a sound event occurred closely in time with each visual frame.

Second, crossmodal temporal integration has, as yet, not been examined systematically with tactile apparent motion (especially movement over an extended, 90-second period of time); thus, the present study was meant to enhance our understanding of crossmodal temporal integration related to the tactile modality.

Recent work on crossmodal temporal integration has also shown that apparent motion in one modality can be modulated solely by the timing of events in another modality [5], [6].
