For wild-collected plants and the intraspecific cross of plants from the same population (strain ID nos. 1 9, 15 in Table 1), their parental genetic distances were regarded as zero to discriminate them from the intraspecific cross of plants from different populations.
Through the lengthy empirical study of mutations obtained through deliberate crosses of plant varieties, breeders can predict the advent of specific characteristics such as drought resistance or fungal tolerance.
Thus, the molecular mechanisms underlying cross-talk of stresses on plants and cross-tolerance of plants to stresses are still unclear, but our study provides a new perspective towards understanding these processes and interactions from transcriptional level.
However, the establishment of similarity groups, jointly with morphologic and agronomic data, can be used in the selection and crossing of superior plants, allowing for a more efficient use of the existing genetic variability conserved in the collection.
