In dark greenish blue sample gx-10, three paint layers were observed from the cross-section (Figure 7a).
The organic core was found to have a rectangular cross-section (Figure 1d), with no evident damage throughout the length of the NW (Figure 1c).
The nanostructures grown in zone 4 had a very short rod-like morphology with a rectangular or square cross-section (Figure 2d).
Another cross-section (Figure 4b), prepared from a sample of medallion D8, showed two layers of yellow and white colour, constituted by lead chromate and gypsum, respectively.

The delicate construction of the skull is well seen in transverse cross-section (Figure 1E, red), in which the total area of all bone connecting the muzzle to the occipital unit of the skull is approximately 1.0 cm2 (Text S2, Figure S3).
Extant probing birds, such as sandpipers, share long jaws and ventrally located occiputs with azhdarchids, but differ in that the margins of their rostra are parallel rather than tapering, and in that their jaws are sub-cylindrical in cross-section (Figure 7B; [111], [111]).
