SEM EDS analyses were carried out on cross sections and paint samples placed on double sided conductive adhesive carbon tabs using a Hitachi S-3400 N scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM EDS) operating at an acceleration voltage of 20 kV and low vacuum mode at 25 Pa.

I place the samples in moulds and embed them in polyester resin so that I can prepare cross sections of the paint layers.
Analyses of cross sections of the paint samples were performed by SEM EDS and Raman spectroscopy in order to obtain information about the pigments used.
In the lower part of the cross section (Figure 3), the original painting appears composed of a conventional gesso ground (layer 1) covered by a red layer of bole made of earth pigments (layer 2) beneath a metallic leaf (layer 3).
The authors of this study were able to examine cross-sections of paint specimens collected from the site and microstratigraphic analysis enabled the sequence of overlapping paintings to be clarified.
