That move has gone some way to shoring up the credibility of economic forecasts, but the brief history of the OBR so far suggests there is some way to go yet on accuracy.
Stories involving interviews with scientists that are proven to be hype, indirectly as well as directly, erode the trust of civil society and its leaders in the integrity of the scientific community and the credibility of its forecasts.
Dieckmann et al. also found that when evaluating a forecast in hindsight, their decision makers tended to report lower levels of blame and higher levels of source credibility for forecasts that reported uncertainty ranges as compared to single value point assessments.
"Ultimately the credibility of the forecast doesn't derive from whether it's a point wrong one year or another," he said.
