I too have been a fan of the creation-of-need – advertising-svengali – profit-from-human-vanity version of the rise of consumer culture story, but lately it seems to me that it erroneously assumes that some people (then vs. now, wealthy vs. poor, educated vs. ignorant, etc). are significantly stupider or greedier than others: it's a character-driven view of social outcomes.
