Cranbrook, city, southeastern corner of British Columbia, Canada.
Cranbrook was founded by a Detroit newspaper publisher, George G. Booth, and his wife, Ellen Scripps Booth, and is named for his father's birthplace in England.
The art museum (built 1940 41, opened 1942) is one of several buildings of Cranbrook Educational Community on the Booth estate; it is surrounded by landscaped gardens containing sculptures, fountains, and tree-lined walks.
These institutions merged in the mid-1980s to become the coeducational Cranbrook Kingswood Schools.
It includes such areas as (roughly from north to south) Woodford Wells, Hainault Estate, Woodford, Woodford Bridge, Barkingside, part of Snaresbrook, Wanstead, Newbury Park, Chadwell Heath, Seven Kings, part of Leytonstone, Aldersbrook, Cranbrook Park, Goodmayes, and Ilford.
Together with the Cranbrook Academy of Art (1932), a postgraduate institution, they constitute the Cranbrook Educational Community.
