After the launch of the French SPOT satellite system in February of 1986, the civilian remote sensing sector was provided with the capability of applying high-resolution MS imagery to a range of land use and land cover analyses.
Both direct observation and remotely sensed land cover analyses showed extensive large-scale commercial cereal cultivation in the outer ring of former group ranches around the Maasai Mara National Reserve MMNRR).
Although in situ observations of algal assemblages in the NWHI occurred concurrently with coral surveys via a photoquadrat methodology from 2002 to 2007 [35], percent cover analyses of species level macroalgal populations have only been completed for three islands [5], [36], [37].
We conclude, however, although others may debate it, that satellite-based tree-cover analyses based on CART methods will, by their very nature, produce discontinuous tree-cover distributions, even if the 'true' distribution is uniform (Fig. 3).
The tree-cover analyses discussed here seem to provide an especially clear example where statistical artefacts in an EO product interact with the motives of the application and thereby bias the conclusions ('the CART pulling the horse').
